Statement by Ed Terbell, Executive Vice-President, Operations for the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad Corporation

“Good Afternoon. At approximately 2:08 a.m. this morning a southbound DM&E train struck some stationary cars near the State Street Crossing in Bettendorf.

Emergency response crews contained a small diesel leak from the second locomotive. Most of the railcars were empty. None contained any hazardous materials. Approximately one dozen railcars cars were involved in the derailment (nine railcars, two locomotives and one car leaning).

It is with great sadness that I confirm the fatalities of the locomotive engineer and conductor involved in the derailment early this morning.

Andrew Reed, age 27, was a conductor based out of, and residing in, Savanna, Illinois. He joined the DM&E in August 2004.

The locomotive engineer was also based in Savanna. Respecting the wishes of his family, his name will not be released.

The DM&E and the men and women who make up our company want to express our sincere and heartfelt sorrow to the families and friends for their loss. Our crew and their families are in our thoughts and prayers.

Our company’s focus is to deal with this tragedy and to assist the families in their time of need. Senior officials from our company have already spoken with them and will continue to offer any support that is required.

In addition to working with the families, we have launched a full investigation into this incident. All federal, state and local agencies have been advised of the incident.

On behalf of the DM&E, I would like to express our appreciation to Bettendorf emergency services, fire, police and the City of Bettendorf for their quick response this morning.”
